If you conceive this week and do get pregnant, this would be your week 2. (So, yeah, you may be kinda-sorta-be 2 weeks pregnant right now! Congratulations!)

That equation might sound a little off, but the math checks out – and we’ll show you how.

The first day of your last menstrual period

It’s not that you’re bad at math; it’s just that pregnancy is calculated from your last period. So, technically, the first day of your period is your first week of pregnancy. Since ovulation occurs in the second week, this is when conception is likely to happen, hence the term week 2 of pregnancy.

Understanding your pregnancy at 2 weeks

Here’s what is happening inside your body:

At two weeks pregnant, your body works hard to turn that space into an inviting nursery. It’s initiating a remarkable series of biological processes for potential conception.

During this time, known as the follicular phase of your menstrual cycle, the focus is primarily on ovulation—the pivotal moment when an egg is released from the ovary, making fertilisation possible.

The orchestration of this process involves a symphony of hormones. Since they’re driving this show, they play nice and take their places in the spotlight one at a time.

Enter the FSH. The follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH) encourages the growth of multiple ovarian follicles, each containing an egg. By around day 5, luteinising hormone (LH) levels rise in tandem with FSH, further stimulating the follicles. As these follicles mature, they produce estrogen, which thickens the lining of your uterus, setting the stage for a fertilised egg to attach and begin the weeks of pregnancy.

A significant surge in LH marks the end of this phase of follicle development, usually about 24 to 36 hours before ovulation occurs, prompting the most mature follicle to release its egg into the fallopian tubes. Now that they have set the stage, they sit back and wait for you to make a move and get busy with some baby-making. Because this is the window where your conception is most likely to occur if sperm meets egg.

Although you may not feel distinct physical changes such as light spotting or lower abdomen discomfort and might not even know whether conception has occurred, your body is already busy preparing for the possibility of pregnancy.

This is a crucial time to start adopting healthy prenatal habits, like taking vitamins, including folic acid daily, and avoiding alcohol and smoking. These healthy habits can help support this intricate and delicate process.

Here are 7 pregnancy symptoms when you are 2 weeks pregnant:

1. Increased sex drive

Ahh, the need for some action! That’s the body’s way of getting what it needs.

During the second week of pregnancy, many women experience a noticeable increase in their sex drive. This surge in libido coincides with the fertile window of the menstrual cycle when the chances of conception are highest. Hormonal fluctuations during this time not only enhance sexual desire but may also make a woman’s body odour more appealing to potential mates, possibly as a biological cue aligned with peak fertility. 2. Heightened sense of smell

Can anyone smell that? Nope, just you!

The second week of pregnancy is a critical time to start making healthier lifestyle choices. Eliminating harmful habits such as drinking and smoking is crucial, as these can affect the development of your baby’s brain and overall health.

2. Start popping prenatal supplements

To support your baby’s early development and protect them from neural tube defects, start taking prenatal supplements, especially 400 mg of folic acid, as soon as you plan on becoming pregnant. These supplements are vital for providing the nutrients necessary for healthy growth—and a VIP pass to your bub’s health.

Add vitamins with DHA (docosahexaenoic acid), an omega-3 fatty acid essential for developing your baby’s brain and eyes. The recommended dosage of DHA during pregnancy and breastfeeding is typically 200 mg per day.

1. Schedule a preconception checkup

Every spaceship needs great mission control. Begin by visiting your healthcare provider for a preconception checkup. This is the time to discuss any concerns and ensure your body is ready for pregnancy. Your doctor can advise you on medications and supplements and address any pre-existing health issues.

Available from 7 am to midnight (AEST/EADT), 7 days a week, including public holidays, this service puts you in touch with maternal child health nurses who can offer guidance.

2. Time your love-making

This may feel awkward and more of a chore, but since timing increases your chances of conception, you need to have sex frequently during your fertile window.

Schedule “happy time” frequently during your fertile window. Aim for every 2-3 days, covering the five before ovulation, the big O day, and the day after. Think of it as “Mission Totes Possible.”

Engaging in intercourse every two to three days during this period ensures maximum exposure to sperm when the egg is released. So don’t forget to add it to your calendars.
PS: While daily intercourse may optimize your chances, having sex every two to three days post-period can be effective, as sperm can survive for up to 72 hours in the body.
