With training camp and the preseason in the rear-view mirror, the New England Patriots are on to building their first 53-man roster for the upcoming 2024 NFL season.
By 4 p.m. ET on Tuesday, Aug. 27, the Patriots and the league’s other 31 teams will have to trim as many as 37 players from their offseason squads — moving from a maximum of 90 to to more than 53. This means that hundreds of players are about to hit waivers and the open market over the next few hours and days.
There will not only be plenty of releases, but also a lot of other transactions ranging from trades, to waiver wire pickups, to free agent signings, to players being moved to injury lists. To not get lost in all the action, we have you covered.

The Patriots’ final moves to the 53-man roster deadline look as follows: DT Christian Barmore was placed on the non-football injury list with a designation to return; S/LB Marte Mapu was placed on the injured reserve with a designation to return; LB Joe Giles-Harris was released; LB Sione Takitaki was moved to reserve/PUP. | Patriots roster count: 53
Second-year offensive lineman Atonio Mafi, who started five games last season, has been let go. Mafi struggled this training camp and was a long shot to make the team. | Patriots roster count: 57 (4 to 53)
One of the more surprising moves so far: cornerback Shaun Wade has been waived despite seemingly earning a spot as one of the top five cornerbacks on the roster. Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. | Patriots roster count: 58 (5 to 53)
After being a late training camp addition, New England has let go of offensive tackle Kellen Diesch. | Patriots roster count: 59 (6 to 53)
UDFA wide receiver David Wallis has been waived, despite making several plays throughout the preseason as a returner. He’s a practice squad candidate. | Patriots roster count: 60 (7 to 53)
The Patriots waived former rugby player Jotham Russell, who did not count against the 90-man roster this summer as a member of the international pathway program. Russell could return to the practice squad as their international pathway program player. | Patriots roster count: 61 (8 to 53)
After missing the last week of practices, the Patriots placed tackle Calvin Anderson on season-ending injured reserve. | Patriots roster count: 61 (8 to 53)
The Patriots’ kicker competition is over: sophom*ore Chad Ryland has been let go. | Patriots roster count: 62 (9 to 53)
A.J. Thomas, who joined a deep safety group upon his arrival in early August, has been let go. He remained on the bottom of the depth chart throughout his tenure, despite seeing regular preseason snaps. | Patriots roster count: 63 (10 to 53)
Defensive lineman Kobe Jones, who joined the Patriots late in training camp, has been let go again. He appeared in one preseason game for the team, playing 27 defensive snaps. | Patriots roster count: 64 (11 to 53)
The Patriots’ latest batch of roster cuts is headlined by running back Kevin Harris, who competed for the RB3 spot this summer and had some promising moments in preseason. He has been waived, alongside offensive lineman Liam Fornadel and wide receiver Matt Landers. | Patriots roster count: 65 (12 to 53)
After falling to fourth-string status, quarterback Bailey Zappe has been waived by the team. | Patriots roster count: 68 (15 to 53)
After fellow UDFA running back Deshaun Fenwick was waived on Monday, Terrell Jennings is now joining him on the cutting block on Tuesday. Jennings did lead the Patriots with 74 rushing yards in preseason. | Patriots roster count: 69 (16 to 53)
Five months after joining the Patriots on a one-year free agency deal, Armon Watts has been sent to injured reserve, ending his season. He found himself behind younger options at the defensive tackle position in training camp. | Patriots roster count: 70 (17 to 53)
The Patriots are thinning out the herd at the safety position. Fourth-year man Joshuah Bledsoe has been waived. | Patriots roster count: 71 (18 to 53)
Backup tight end Mitchell Wilcox, who at times was the No. 3 option at his position, will not make the 53-man roster. He has been waived. | Patriots roster count: 72 (19 to 53)
Kendrick Bourne is not yet ready to return from a torn ACL. The veteran wide receiver will start the year on the PUP list, and miss at least the first four games as a result. | Patriots roster count: 73 (20 to 53)
Cole Strange will reportedly start the 2024 season on the physically unable to perform list. An unsurprising move after he tore his patellar tendon last December. | Patriots roster count: 74 (21 to 53)
New England made 14 roster moves official on Monday afternoon. Besides the eight previously reported cuts, the team also parted ways with tight end Jacob Warren, offensive linemen Zuri Henry and Charles Turner, defensive tackle Josiah Bronson, outside linebacker Christian McCarroll, and cornerback Mikey Victor. | Patriots roster count: 75 (22 to 53)
The Patriots started the process of trimming down their running back room as they waived UDFA Deshaun Fenwick. | Patriots roster count: 81 (28 to 53)
Despite leading the pass rush with three pressures in the preseason finale, New England parted ways with defensive end William Bradley-King. The defender took on a larger role recently with injuries along the edge, perhaps making him a candidate to return on the practice squad. | Patriots roster count: 82 (29 to 53)
Undrafted rookie linebacker Steele Chambers has been let go. He was buried on the depth chart even with fellow LB Sione Takitaki on the physically unable to perform list. | Patriots roster count: 83 (30 to 53)
The Patriots’ crowded wide receiver group has seen its first departure. Kawaan Baker, who played a minor role on offense all summer, has been let go. | Patriots roster count: 84 (31 to 53)
Sam Roberts will not be part of the Patriots’ initial 53-man roster. The 2022 draft pick has been let go after what was a quiet preseason and training camp. | Patriots roster count: 85 (32 to 53)
The Patriots added two more players to their list of roster cuts on Monday. Tight end La’Michael Pettway and cornerback Azizi Hearn were both let go after never emerging past depth status. | Patriots roster count: 86 (33 to 53)
The Patriots’ first cut of the week reduced the long snapper count from two to one: Tucker Addington, who served as a camp body behind Joe Cardona, has been let go. | Patriots roster count: 88 (35 to 53)
Despite reports that Chad Ryland was being waived, the Patriots are reportedly still “ironing out the details” of how to proceed. New England might be looking for a trade partner. | Link
